Chapter 11

A barrage of explosive splashes sounded out from the moat, and I held my breath and watched as dark shapes launched themselves from the water. They all landed on the ground inside the oasis and took off running toward its interior. The giant octopus-like creatures lurched down the streets with a swaying, slithering gait, and the long-necked beasts thundered along with blue-skinned sirens perched on their backs.

“Go now,” I commanded the gargoyles and glanced at the pods they were cradling carefully in their giant, stony hands. “Remember, aim for the necromancers’ temples with those. And if you encounter any warrior women, feel free to toss them into the dragongleam. But don’t injure any of them.”

I knew by now that the stone guardians would obey my commands, but they were also incredibly big, and I didn’t want any of the women accidentally getting crushed in their massive hands.

“Yes, your grace,” the guardian boomed.

The other giant gargoyles all gave me matching nods. They kicked off into the air, and their stony wings clapped loudly as they sailed off into the oasis.

The exception was one who landed just across the moat. He stomped over to the nearest wooden structure, like I had commanded.

Then something occurred to me.

“Oh, shit,” I muttered. I raised my voice to a yell. “Make sure there’s no one inside first!”

The gargoyle froze with his giant fist raised and then nodded. He quickly changed course and crouched so he could knock on the door.

Or try to, at least.

The stony being must not have known his own strength, because his fist crashed right through the door.

I choked back a laugh as the gargoyle shot me a distinctly apologetic look. He abandoned the splintered remnants of the door, straightened up, and looked intently through the window of the building.

Whatever he saw must have satisfied him that the building was unoccupied, because he promptly knocked off the roof and wrenched the wooden planks of the building apart.

Then he lumbered over and set several of them down side by side to stretch across the moat.

“Time to cross,” I called to the commanders.

They barked orders to the soldiers and urged their stone steeds forward. The first ones were slow and cautious in crossing the makeshift bridge, but as it became clear that the planks were sturdy enough to hold, more riders streamed across at a gallop.

Since Artemn and Meikha were the most practiced at shielding a whole group, they stuck close by my sides at the front of a v-formation. I held my gun at the ready as I followed with my own women and the Exalted warriors at my sides, and I made sure Ellie clung close to me as I scanned the area for any potential threats.

Not that any threat was likely to get anywhere near her in the first place with the Exalted warriors, Indy, Artemn, Meikha, and Rey sandwiching her in on either side. Even on her own, I knew my petite warrior was more than capable of taking care of herself.
